Matching Chords to Scales, Using the Major Iolian Scales Over Two Octaves, Using Major Scales As Fills, The V Chord Mixolydian Scale and Using It To Solo
One neat way to split up a chord in both hands is to play the 1-5 in the left hand with the 7 3 5 in the right hand.
Cmaj7 becomes B E G (Right Hand) / C G (Left Hand)
Cm7 becomes Bb Eb G / C G
C7 becomes C G / Bb E G
C7+5 becomes C Ab / Bb E Ab
Cm7b5 becomes C Gb / Bb Eb Gb
and the list just goes on and on!
This is called a voicing! There are many other types of voicings.

(Behind the Scenes Peek! This is from Lesson 6 of AP 201 and is usually reserved for STUDENTS only)
There are several different ways to play thirteenth chords. One way is to simply play the 11 chord (the chord a whole step down from the root note) and then add the 13th note.
Example: G11 = F A C – Now add the 13th (E) G13 = F A C E
The formal way to make a 13th chord is to take the b7, 9th, and 11th, and 13th of the major scale.
Example:
G | A | B | C | D | E | F# | G | A | B | C | D | E |
1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | 10 | 11 | 12 | 13 |
The b7 = F; the 9th = A; the 11th = C, and the 13th = E. Therefore a G13 = F – A – C – E over G in LH.

For a really fancy ending try this – To End: Ab2 / / Bb2 / / C2
But now I see.
*Notice the b6 chord to the b7 chord ending at the end of the song, gives it a nice unique touch. You can use this at the ending of any song to give it a cool ending; however, do not try and use it at the ending of every song. Don’t overuse it!!
SUBSTITUTING THIRTEENTH CHORDS
There is only one rule for substituting thirteenth chords.
Anytime there is an eleventh chord, you can substitute a thirteenth chord.
NOTE: This rule does NOT apply to minor elevenths.
Thirteenth chords are very simple to substitute in songs. They are usually used on the I to IV progression and on the V to I progression.
For example:
F / / / F / / / Bb / / / F / / /
Dm / / / Gm / / / C / / / C / / / F
Now let’s add some 13ths.
F2 / / / F13 / / / Bbmaj9 / / / F / / /
Dm9 / / / Gm9 / / / C2 / / / C13 / / / F2
