The Fastest and Easiest Way to Learn Pentecostal & Gospel Music

There are several different ways to play thirteenth chords. One way is to simply play the 11 chord (the chord a whole step down from the root note) and then add the 13th note.
Example: G11 = F A C – Now add the 13th (E) G13 = F A C E
The formal way to make a 13th chord is to take the b7, 9th, and 11th, and 13th of the major scale.
Example:
G | A | B | C | D | E | F# | G | A | B | C | D | E |
1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | 10 | 11 | 12 | 13 |
The b7 = F; the 9th = A; the 11th = C, and the 13th = E. Therefore a G13 = F – A – C – E over G in LH.

*Notice the b6 chord to the b7 chord ending at the end of the song, gives it a nice unique touch. You can use this at the ending of any song to give it a cool ending; however, do not try and use it at the ending of every song. Don’t overuse it!!
SUBSTITUTING THIRTEENTH CHORDS
There is only one rule for substituting thirteenth chords.
Anytime there is an eleventh chord, you can substitute a thirteenth chord.
NOTE: This rule does NOT apply to minor elevenths.
Thirteenth chords are very simple to substitute in songs. They are usually used on the I to IV progression and on the V to I progression.
For example:

Dm / / / Gm / / / C / / / C / / / F
Now let’s add some 13ths.
