Matching Chords to Scales, Using the Major Iolian Scales Over Two Octaves, Using Major Scales As Fills, The V Chord Mixolydian Scale and Using It To Solo
We get a lot of students that tell me they want that fat chord sound. So how do you get that?
ANSWER: Big full-sounding chords and chord voicings.
You need to be playing more notes.
For example, your C2 (C D G/C) turns into a Cmaj9add13 (A B D E G/C).
Or maybe your Cm7 (Bb Eb G/C) turns into a Cm9add11 (Bb D Eb F G/C).
It’s not all about your right hand chord, but your left hand plays a part too.
However, before you can play these big full-sounding chords in either hand, you need to learn all of your 7ths, 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths!

HOW TO MAKE, PLAY & USE MINOR 9ths
This lesson is part of a 12 lesson course “The Secrets to Understanding Gospel and Pentecostal Style Music” available on our website.
There were many times when I was learning to play the piano where I would be trying to learn something new (it may have been a new chord, fill or run, chord progression, or song) and I could just not seem to get it perfect like I wanted it to be.
I would become frustrated and perhaps throw my book on the floor in disgust or get up from the piano and just walk away angrily. However, frustration is part of learning. The important part is never to give up. The old timers said it like this “if you get bucked off the horse, go back and get back on the horse.” Otherwise you became known as “horse-shy.” Don’t be piano-shy!
Now that didn’t mean that you had to get back on the horse right then. Perhaps you came back several hours later or the next day and tried again. However, the important part is that you did not decide to just quit and become a loser. You decided to try again and become a winner. As the old saying goes “quitters never win and winners never quit.”
So, if you have hit a stumbling block in your playing or if you don’t even think you have the potential to learn, go back and try again. It’s how many times you fall and get back up that matter. It does not matter how many times you fall. No one has an easy road to learning, and we all had to spend a lot of time and practice and hard work to get to where we are today. (I remember a time in my life when I had a lot of free time where I literally spent 8+ hours practicing everyday.)
So don’t become disappointed or quit when you can’t get it perfect immediately, just go back and “get back on the horse” for another ride, and remember that frustration is part of learning. Now go practice!

There are several different ways to play thirteenth chords. One way is to simply play the 11 chord (the chord a whole step down from the root note) and then add the 13th note.
Example: G11 = F A C – Now add the 13th (E) G13 = F A C E
The formal way to make a 13th chord is to take the b7, 9th, and 11th, and 13th of the major scale.
Example:

The b7 = F; the 9th = A; the 11th = C, and the 13th = E. Therefore a G13 = F – A – C – E over G in LH.

*Notice the b6 chord to the b7 chord ending at the end of the song, gives it a nice unique touch. You can use this at the ending of any song to give it a cool ending; however, do not try and use it at the ending of every song. Don’t overuse it!!
SUBSTITUTING THIRTEENTH CHORDS
There is only one rule for substituting thirteenth chords.
Anytime there is an eleventh chord, you can substitute a thirteenth chord.
NOTE: This rule does NOT apply to minor elevenths.
Thirteenth chords are very simple to substitute in songs. They are usually used on the I to IV progression and on the V to I progression.
For example:

Now let’s add some 13ths.

This is a hard copy of the course for those with limited Internet access or who just want to have their video lessons forever! (With the ONLINE OPTION, your login expires after 6 months) You can choose between a DVD Set or USB Thumbdrive Set.
DVD Curriculum Set

Fully Diminished Chords (root, b3, b5, bb7)
Here is the technical way for making a Fully Diminished Chord. You take your root, you flat your 3rd, your flat your 5th (which makes a regular diminished chord – Fdim – F Ab B – for example) and then you flat your flatted 7th.
So you basically take a DOMINANT 7th chord (F7 = F A C Eb for example) and flat every note in it except for the root note.
(So flat ‘A’ which makes ‘Ab’, flat ‘C’ which makes ‘B’ and then flat ‘Eb’ (move it down one) which makes ‘D.’

SUBSTITUTING FULLY DIMINISHED CHORDS
Rule 1: Substituting fully diminished chords is very simple. You only substitute them right before you go to a minor chord.
In other words…
Going to Dm7? Substitute C#dim7.
Going to Gm7? Substitute F#dim7.
Get it? Just substitute the note a half step down from the minor chord that you are going to.
Note the strong use of this in “Worthy” and “Amazing Grace.” This works, however, in almost song.
Rule 2: Substitute a fully diminished chord on your #4 after the IV chord chord and before the I/V chord in a fast or medium “jazzy” or “fast Pentecostal” type song.
Notice the use of this in “There Is No Telling.”
It works in most of your faster songs though. Very common ending movement on faster songs is
I – I7/III – IV7 – #IVdim7 – I/V – VI7b9 – II9 – V7 – I7
F – F7/A – Bb7 – Bdim7 – F/C – D7b9 – G9 – C7 – F7
This progression probably ends about 70% of our faster Pentecostal songs.

Remember, just put them in on the beat before the minor chord that you are going to.

Learn this simple passing chord vamp.
TIPS: Sliding off the black notes is called grace notes.
We use the IV as the passing chord.
For example, F is the passing chord (a chord we use in passing when on the same chord for a long time)
So, in this example on C chord, we play C E G to C F A and then repeat (this is the theory but be sure to listen to get it).

Here we are again! Almost the end of the year and here they come…all of the typical resolutions, promises, and commitments that we always hear. What I have noticed, however, is that most people make the same commitments year after year…but never follow through.
My question to you is simply this: in another year, when you are looking back at last year and facing the next year, will you still be resolving to learn how to play gospel keyboard or you will be glad that you took some gospel piano lessons and learned how to play?
It should only take one year to learn how to play. I had played piano chords for years, but in less than a year I learned how to play black gospel piano (even though I’m white-lol) and began to be used in service.
What made the difference? 1) The right materials 2) commitment/practice 3) and opportunity…in that order.
